Mystery Fantasy Children's Book for Upper Elementary Students Released

[Financial News] In the children's publishing market, a new type of fantasy storybook that combines traditional cultural elements with the mystery genre is drawing the attention of parents and young readers, moving beyond conventional folk tales.
MiraeN's children's publishing brand Iseum announced on the 29th that it had released the new mystery fantasy storybook 'The Child Who Crossed the Red Gate' for third- and fourth-grade elementary school readers.
To increase engagement among young readers accustomed to stimulating media, the new book adopts a 'mystery puzzle' format while making active use of Korean traditional culture. Kkokdu, wooden figures believed to guide the deceased; hongsalmun, red gates marking the boundary between this world and the next; and yojigyeong, an object said to reflect the past, appear alongside legendary beings such as the gumiho, eoduksini, and bulgasari as key clues in solving the case. The book has been praised for allowing children to experience traditional cultural elements they had previously encountered only as textbook knowledge through a living story, thereby sparking their interest in reading while deepening their understanding of traditional culture.
The story builds suspense through a logical investigation in which the protagonist seeks the one true statement among the testimonies of four monsters. It also portrays the protagonist's growth through cooperation with others after initially trying to solve everything alone, delivering a message about the courage to face challenges together. To reflect the visual preferences of today's children, who are familiar with comics and animation, illustrator Oit has added dynamic illustrations and sequential visual storytelling.
Marketing targeting the fall children's reading market will also begin in earnest alongside the book's release. To commemorate the publication, MiraeN Iseum will hold the 'Exciting Books Literature Special Exhibition' at major online and offline bookstores, including Kyobo Book Centre, YES24, Aladdin, and Youngpoong Bookstore, throughout October. Customers who purchase books featured in the exhibition will receive free gifts, such as a 'book bingo board' or an 'L-shaped holder,' to help them develop reading habits.
