[Financial News] Samsung Electronics, Samsung C&T, Samsung SDS, Samsung SDI, Samsung Life Insurance and Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance announced on the 29th that they had decided to invest a total of $1 billion in Helix Digital Infrastructure (Helix), an AI infrastructure company established by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKR), a U.S.-based global investment firm.
Samsung Electronics will invest $500 million, while Samsung C&T, Samsung SDS, Samsung SDI, Samsung Life Insurance and Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance will invest a combined $500 million. The Samsung affiliates will join KKR, NVIDIA, U.S. power company Vistra and the Kuwait Investment Authority (KIA) as founding investors in Helix, alongside investors, semiconductor companies and power companies leading the global AI infrastructure ecosystem.
Helix, which announced its launch in June this year, is an integrated provider of AI-related infrastructure, including the development and operation of hyperscale data centers, power generation using baseload and flexible power sources, power transmission and distribution infrastructure, fiber-optic networks, and network infrastructure. Through Helix, the infrastructure needed to meet surging AI demand can be secured quickly and at scale.
Helix is led by Adam Selipsky, former CEO of Amazon Web Services (AWS), and has a dedicated management team comprising leading experts from the data-center and power industries.
As AI data centers evolve beyond simple capital investment projects into core platforms supporting a range of business models, their expansion is creating a new industrial ecosystem spanning power, cooling, semiconductors and finance. The investment by Samsung affiliates is therefore seen as reflecting their determination to secure next-generation AI leadership in the ecosystem surrounding AI data centers.
The investment is particularly viewed as an opportunity to expand the component competitiveness of Samsung affiliates into influence at the systems and infrastructure levels. This could broaden Samsung's role in the AI ecosystem, allowing it to participate directly in building the infrastructure ecosystem rather than remaining merely a component supplier.
In practice, Samsung Electronics Device Solutions Division is supporting the development of global AI infrastructure by responding quickly to changes in global semiconductor demand and supplying cutting-edge semiconductor products. Samsung Electronics DX Division supplies data-center cooling products and solutions, ranging from air-cooling product lines to cooling distribution units (CDUs) for liquid cooling, through FläktGroup, a data-center air-conditioning specialist acquired in 2025.
Samsung C&T's Construction Group is actively pursuing large-scale infrastructure projects as an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor in data-center construction and power generation. Samsung SDS, as an IT services provider, handles data-center design, construction and operation, and its power usage effectiveness (PUE) technology is regarded as among the best in South Korea.
Samsung SDI is recognized for its world-class technology in uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems and battery backup units (BBUs), which are essential for operating data centers with high-performance servers around the clock. The company plans to secure additional business opportunities in this field, where ultra-high-output and high-capacity battery technology is critical.
Samsung Electronics and its affiliates plan to use the investment as an opportunity to continue pursuing synergies by ensuring the smooth supply of global AI data-center infrastructure.
