Woman Lured at Jeju Casino with 'Currency Exchange' Ruse, Robbed and Threatened with Nude Photos

[Financial News | Jeju] By Jung Yong-bok — A Chinese man was arrested after allegedly approaching a woman he met at a casino in Jeju Province under the pretext of offering currency exchange, luring her to a nearby residence, assaulting her and taking valuables worth about 7 million won. He is also accused of photographing her nude and threatening to distribute the images, prompting police to investigate the circumstances of the crime and whether there were additional victims.
According to Jejuseobu Police Station and other sources on the 29th, a Chinese man in his 40s, identified as Mr. A, has been booked on charges including robbery and is being questioned.
Mr. A allegedly approached Ms. B at a casino in Jeju City at around 8 p.m. on the 26th, claiming that he would exchange currency for her, and lured her to a residence near the casino. Police believe he assaulted Ms. B there and took valuables worth about 7 million won.
He is also accused of photographing the victim nude during the crime and threatening to distribute the images. Police are examining whether the photographing and threats violated the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes.
After receiving the report, police analyzed CCTV footage in the area, tracked Mr. A's movements and arrested him. They are investigating how the victim and Mr. A first met at the casino, when he offered to exchange currency and how he brought her to the residence.

This case stands out because the 'currency exchange offer' made at the casino was allegedly used to lure the victim to another location. Police have intensified their crackdown on illegal currency exchange around casinos since March. They believe such activities can combine with loan sharking and lead to other crimes, including fraud, confinement, extortion and assault.
Other crimes involving money and casinos have also continued in Jeju Province. In April, two Chinese nationals were arrested after allegedly stealing a Chinese victim's bag containing casino chips worth about 36 million won. Last year, an illegal currency broker was killed at a hotel in Jeju City that housed a casino, and cash and casino chips were stolen.
Eight casinos for foreign nationals operate in Jeju Province. Casino revenue last year reached 646.5 billion won, up 40.8% from the previous year, while the number of visitors totaled 913,890. As the number of foreign tourists and casino patrons grows, ensuring visitor safety and managing illegal currency exchange are becoming increasingly important alongside industry growth.
The investigation is focused on whether there were additional offenses, as the case allegedly involved not only the theft of valuables but also luring the victim to an outside residence, assaulting her and threatening her with the recorded images.
Police plan to seek an arrest warrant for Mr. A after determining the exact scale of the victim's losses and the circumstances of the crime.
