[Financial News] A chauffeur in his 50s accused of stabbing a woman in her 70s to death at a villa in Namyangju-si, Gyeonggi Province, during the Chuseok holiday has been detained.
Yonhap News Agency and YTN reported on the 29th that the Namyangju Branch of Uijeongbu District Court issued an arrest warrant the previous day for a man in his 50s, identified as A, who is accused of murder, saying, "There is a risk that he may flee."
A is accused of stabbing B, a woman in her 70s, several times in the neck and other areas with a weapon at a villa in Sudong-myeon, Namyangju-si, at around 11 a.m. on the 26th.
B was taken to a hospital immediately after the incident for treatment but died the following day.
Police initially arrested A on suspicion of attempted murder, but after B died, they changed the charge to murder and sought an arrest warrant.
A appeared at the hearing to review his arrest warrant that afternoon. When reporters asked whether he had anything to say to the victim's bereaved family, he replied, "I'm sorry." Asked whether he had planned the crime in advance, he said, "I have committed a sin deserving death."
When asked whether he had prepared the weapon in advance, he replied, "I will tell you everything in court," before entering the courtroom.
A is known to have told police, in substance, "I was at risk of being fired over an unpleasant incident, but B and her husband still wanted to make me work, so I resented them and committed the crime."
Police plan to continue investigating A's motive and whether the crime was planned in advance.
