China Denied a Gold-and-Silver Sweep—Kim Yong-nam Wins Silver in 1m Springboard [Nagoya Asian Games]

[Financial News] China claimed the gold medal, but it was denied a sweep of the top two medals. Kim Yong-nam, a veteran of Korean diving from the Jeju Special Self-Governing Provincial Office, finished between two Chinese athletes to secure the second spot on the Asian Games podium.
Kim Yong-nam scored 373.30 points across six dives to win silver in the men's 1m springboard final at the 2026 Asian Games, held at the Tokyo Aquatics Center in Tokyo, Japan, on the 28th. Olympic champion Wang Zongyuan of China took gold with 442.75 points, while China's Liu Chengzan settled for bronze with 361.45 points.
Kim Yong-nam made his biggest push in the medal race on his fifth dive. From a backward standing position, he performed a forward 21⁄2 somersault and earned 68.80 points. After both divers completed their final dives, Kim led Liu Chengzan by 11.85 points. He prevented China from sweeping the gold and silver medals and put his name on the podium.
For Kim Yong-nam, who has competed at the Asian Games since the 2014 Incheon Games, this silver medal demonstrated the veteran's mettle. Kim Ji-wook, who also competed in the event, finished fifth with 336.20 points, representing the Jeonnam-Gwangju Metropolitan Sports Council.
A Korean diver also reached the podium in the women's 1m springboard event. Kim Su-ji of the Ulsan Metropolitan Sports Council won bronze with 245.05 points across five dives, behind China's Lin Shan with 263.05 points and Long Yiping with 254.25 points.
Kim Su-ji opened with 39.60 points on her first dive, followed by 53.30 points on her second, 47.15 on her third and 50.40 on her fourth. She finished with 54.60 points on her final dive, her highest score of the day. After winning silver in the women's synchronized 3m springboard event with Kim Na-hyun the previous day, she claimed her second medal. Kim Na-hyun finished fifth in the women's 1m springboard event with 228.40 points.
