AI-Predicted '72-Hour Maritime Traffic Congestion'... Korea Maritime Transportation Safety Authority Opens Data via Open API

[Financial News] The Korea Maritime Transportation Safety Authority (KOMSA) has made data predicting maritime traffic congestion over the next 72 hours using artificial intelligence (AI) available for anyone to use.
KOMSA announced on the 28th that it had released its maritime traffic congestion data through an open API. The data uses an AI prediction model to show the level of maritime congestion over the next 72 hours by grade. It contains an average of about 650,000 records per day and does not include personal information.
KOMSA has provided this information through the Maritime Transportation Safety Information System (MTIS)'s Maritime Traffic Congestion Forecast since late 2023. By making it available through an open API, the Authority now allows external users to retrieve and use the data. Users can apply through DATA.GO.KR or MTIS. This year, the data was selected as maritime-sector data for the Top 100 AI and High-Value Public Data initiative, through which the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS) is opening public data with high potential for use in the AI era.
Maritime workers can use the data to check congested waters before departure and plan their voyages. Private companies can combine information on congested waters with navigation equipment such as electronic charts, GPS plotters and marine navigation systems to develop new services. The government and related agencies can use it to manage safety in congested waters and formulate policies.
In 2023, KOMSA introduced the MTIS website and mobile app, as well as the Passenger Ship Traffic Information (PATIS) service developed with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF). More recently, it has expanded the use of maritime traffic data by launching the Ultra-Precise Passenger Ship service with Kakao Map.
