[Financial News] Chung Dong-young, minister of the Ministry of Unification (MOU), plans to visit Northern Ireland and Germany, two of Europe's best-known former divided regions, to develop plans for peace on the Korean Peninsula.
Minister Chung will visit three European countries—the Northern Ireland region of the United Kingdom, Ireland and Germany—from the 28th through October 5 on a six-night, eight-day itinerary.
In Northern Ireland, he plans to visit peace-related facilities and examine the process behind the Northern Ireland peace agreement, also known as the Good Friday Agreement or Belfast Agreement, as well as the history of overcoming conflict. He will then meet with experts in international conflict mediation and key parliamentary figures to share experiences in conflict resolution and institutionalizing peace. At Trinity College in Dublin, he will deliver a special lecture on "Peaceful Coexistence on the Korean Peninsula" at the invitation of the student-led Society for International Affairs (SOFIA).
Minister Chung will also attend a ceremony in Bremen commemorating the 36th anniversary of German Unity Day as a representative of the South Korean government.
The German Unity Day ceremony has been held annually, hosted in rotation by Germany's 16 federal states, since reunification was proclaimed on October 3, 1990. This year's event will take place in Bremen. Before the ceremony, Minister Chung will meet with the President of the Bundesrat, who also serves as the Mayor of Bremen and is hosting the event.
