[Financial News] Samsung C&T has developed and officially certified a precast concrete (PC) dry connection method that delivers the highest level of seismic performance in Korea. The company is stepping up efforts to advance its future housing model, 'Next Home.'
Samsung C&T's Construction Group announced on the 28th that it had obtained technical certification from the Korea Concrete Institute (KCI) for a 'PC special moment beam-column dry connection method.' The method simplifies the connection of columns and beams in PC moment-resisting frame structures while securing the highest level of seismic performance in Korea.
Samsung C&T is leading the development of future housing technology through Next Home, a future housing model that allows residents to freely configure their living spaces according to their lifestyles. Next Home features a new PC moment-resisting frame structure without columns inside individual housing units. Because columns and beams support the building instead of walls, ensuring the safety and seismic performance of the joints where the two members meet was a key challenge.
Beam-column joints in high-rise buildings are required to provide seismic performance equivalent to or greater than that of intermediate moment frames. In particular, special moment frames must maintain structural safety even when deformation reaches 3.5% of the story height. However, conventional dry connection methods for PC structures posed challenges in on-site assembly and had limitations in securing seismic performance.
Samsung C&T therefore developed a connector that combines steel brackets with bolted fastening. After obtaining technical certification in 2024 for an intermediate moment frame technology, the company has now raised seismic performance to the special moment frame level through joint-shape optimization and ultimate performance testing. It is the first company in Korea to obtain KCI technical certification for a special moment frame using a PC dry connection method.
This technical certification is expected to enable both excellent structural safety and construction quality when PC frames are applied to high-rise buildings. By minimizing on-site work, the method is also expected to significantly shorten construction periods.
Byun Dong-gyu, head of Samsung C&T's Housing Technology Innovation Team, said, "This certification is significant because it means that the high seismic performance required for PC moment-resisting frame structures has been achieved through a practical dry connection technology and officially recognized." He added, "We will continue to lead changes in the construction industry through the off-site construction (OSC) method and create unparalleled value based on differentiated technology and quality."
