Samsung Biologics announced on the 28th that it participated in the 2026 BioProcess International (BPI), held in Boston from the 22nd to the 25th (local time), where it presented its process development achievements and capabilities to support the entire biopharmaceutical development cycle.
BPI is a global event where the latest technologies in all areas of biopharmaceutical development, manufacturing, and analysis are shared and partnerships are discussed. This year, about 250 companies and more than 3,000 biopharmaceutical experts from around the world attended.
Samsung Biologics has participated in BPI for nine consecutive years since 2018. This year, it also set up an independent booth to showcase its capabilities across the entire biopharmaceutical development process, from contract research (CRO) to contract development (CDO) and contract manufacturing (CMO).
In particular, the company presented technologies applied to actual process development through expert presentations and poster sessions.
Lee Tae-hee, head of Samsung Biologics' Antibody Cell Purification Process Development Team and an executive director, gave a presentation on the 23rd titled "From Complexity to Confidence." He presented a case in which the development timeline was reduced from 13 months to 9.5 months by designing processes tailored to molecular characteristics based on integrated manufacturing and quality control (CMC).
The company also unveiled technology designed to increase productivity during the cell-culture stage. Lee So-jung, head of the Cell Culture Process Development Group, introduced a strategy that uses the cell-culture intensification platform S-Tensify to increase cell density and raise titer—the concentration of the target substance in the culture medium—to about twice its previous level while maintaining quality.
Kim Young-hee, head of the Cell Line Development Group, introduced a cell line development platform for complex molecules. The platform focuses on improving the efficiency of cell line development by managing quality and efficacy together from the early stages of drug development.
The company also showcased analytical technologies for cell and gene therapies. Samsung Biologics participated in an international conference on cell and gene therapies held alongside BPI, where it presented an analytical strategy for evaluating the quality of adeno-associated virus (AAV)-based gene therapies.
Abigail De La Pena Garcia, head of the AAV Technology Group, introduced Full Capsid analysis, which evaluates the proportion of AAV particles that contain the therapeutic gene properly. The method enables a more accurate assessment of the quality and efficacy of gene therapies, the company explained.
At the event, Samsung Biologics also presented its differentiated CDO capabilities in organoid applications and its multi-modality manufacturing capabilities, which enable the production of various types of biopharmaceuticals.
James Choi, executive vice president overseeing sales support at Samsung Biologics, said, "It is meaningful to showcase through BPI our capabilities to support the entire biopharmaceutical lifecycle, from CRO to CDO and CMO, as well as our differentiated technologies." He added, "We will continue to further solidify our position in the global biopharmaceutical market through advanced technologies and services."
