According to industry sources on the 28th, the Volkswagen Golf GTI, first produced in 1976, has sold more than 2.3 million units worldwide to date, establishing itself as Volkswagen's flagship high-performance model. With a compact body, powerful engine and agile driving performance, it is widely regarded as having effectively pioneered the category of high-performance cars that can be enjoyed in everyday driving.
The model has also maintained steady sales in South Korea. In 2024, 540 units were sold, making it the best-selling imported high-performance hatchback, while 395 units were sold last year. This year, cumulative deliveries reached 321 units through July.
The model currently sold in South Korea is equipped with a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder gasoline turbo TSI engine that produces a maximum output of 245 PS and peak torque of 37.7 kg·m. It delivers peak torque between 1,750 and 4,300 rpm, providing immediate acceleration in everyday driving. The engine is paired with a seven-speed direct-shift gearbox (DSG) to reduce power loss and enhance direct response. Its official combined fuel economy in South Korea is 10.8 km/L.
The Vehicle Dynamics Manager (VDM), which integrates control of the chassis and drivetrain, is another key technology. It coordinates the Electronic Stability Control (ESC), electronically controlled hydraulic front differential lock (Vorderachsquersperre, VAQ), cross-differential system (XDS) and adaptive chassis control (DCC) to improve cornering stability and agility.
The latest model retains the design identity that has defined the Golf GTI for 50 years, including its signature red strip, while featuring an illuminated Volkswagen logo on the front for the first time in GTI history. The interior comes standard with Vienna leather premium sport seats featuring heating, ventilation and power adjustment, a 12.9-inch next-generation MIB4 infotainment system and a Harman Kardon sound system. It also offers driving and parking assistance features, including Park Assist Plus, which automatically controls steering, acceleration and braking to assist with parallel and perpendicular parking.
The official price in South Korea is 52.75 million won, based on a 5% individual consumption tax. Volkswagen Group Korea explained that it has also reduced post-purchase costs through a five-year or 150,000-kilometer extended warranty program and a program that supports customers' deductibles for accident repairs up to five times.
Meanwhile, Volkswagen Group Korea announced on the 16th that it would launch the Golf GTI Black Edition to commemorate the model's 20th anniversary in South Korea. The special edition features dedicated side decals combining red, the signature GTI color, with a honeycomb pattern on a black body to create a distinctive design.
Michael Ant, president of Volkswagen Group Korea, said, "As the Volkswagen Golf GTI has been loved in the South Korean market for 20 years, this Black Edition was created to commemorate that significance in an even more special way. Through a design that emphasizes the GTI's distinctive character and tangible customer benefits, customers will be able to experience the special value unique to a limited-edition model."
