[Financial News] A frightening incident occurred at a well-known oyster bar in Euljiro when a broken blade measuring 5 cm was found in an oyster dish ordered by a customer. Criticism has continued after the danger posed by the foreign object itself and the establishment's inadequate initial response came to light.
According to a post uploaded to the social media platform Threads on the 26th, the author, identified as A, had an absurd experience after visiting the establishment on the 24th.
A asked for scissors because they wanted to cut an oyster in half, and discovered a 5-cm blade fragment lying beneath it as they cut into the oyster.
Shocked, A quietly took the blade to the counter to report it, hoping not to disrupt the atmosphere. However, all they received was a single apology and 2 new oysters.
During the payment process, A asked a counter employee, "Is the owner not here?" The employee reportedly replied that they were the owner.
When A asked again, "Did you know the knife broke while you were shucking the oysters?" the employee replied, "I knew, and I thought the blade had fallen onto the floor."
The establishment reportedly offered not to charge A for the food only after being questioned.
A expressed outrage, saying, "I wasn't saying that because I wanted to eat more new oysters. I said it because this was an establishment I liked, and I thought they needed to properly know that an accident had occurred. If they knew the knife had broken, shouldn't they have first checked whether it might have ended up in the food?"
A continued, "If I had swallowed the blade, I could have been rushed to the emergency room during the Chuseok holiday. What shocked me more than the foreign object itself was their attitude afterward."
As the controversy spread, the establishment's owner, B, posted an apology on Threads.
A had earlier stated that "a piece of a utility knife measuring about 5 cm came out," referring to the blade fragment that was found. B explained that it was "the broken middle section of an oyster knife used for shucking, not a utility knife." However, B added, "The type of knife does not lessen the danger of this incident or our responsibility in the slightest."
According to B, an employee collected and discarded the handle and tip after the oyster knife broke during shucking, then continued working with a new knife. However, the employee apparently failed to realize that the middle section of the blade had also broken off.
B said, "The person who claimed at the scene to be the owner was actually a manager, not the proprietor. Even in the proprietor's absence, it was my responsibility that we had failed to establish safety standards allowing for an immediate response."
B continued, "The moment we realized the knife had broken, we should have stopped work and checked for all the broken pieces. This was not something that could be resolved simply by waiving the charge for the food."
B conveyed a desire to apologize to A in person and promised measures to prevent a recurrence, including immediately stopping work when a tool breaks and discarding all food involved.
People who encountered the story reacted negatively, saying, "A blade in food eaten in one bite—what if it had been swallowed?" "I could have died while eating oysters," and "This is serious enough to report to the district office."
The establishment's response also drew criticism: "Would giving 2 more oysters really smooth this over?" "Did they still want to charge for the food even then?" and "They only apologize now that it has become an issue."
