[Financial News] South Korean canoeists Jo Gwang-hee and Kim Hyo-bin won gold medals on consecutive days, becoming the first athletes from the South Korean delegation to win two gold medals at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.
The Jo Gwang-hee-Kim Hyo-bin duo won the men's K2 500m final in 1:31.859 at the canoe sprint competition held on the 25th at Miyoshi Lake Canoe Course in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. It was South Korea's 11th gold medal of the Games.
The two athletes had teamed up the previous day to win South Korea's first gold medal in the men's K4 500m. They then claimed the K2 500m title as well.
At the previous Hangzhou Asian Games, Jo Gwang-hee won a silver medal in the K2 500m with Jang Sang-won. After teaming up with Kim Hyo-bin at these Games, he moved up to gold.
South Korea's victory in the men's K2 500m at the Asian Games was its first in 36 years, since the Cheon In-sik-Park Cha-geun duo won at the 1990 Beijing Asian Games.
South Korea finished 0.317 seconds ahead of Japan, which recorded 1:32.176. The Korean duo ranked second after clocking 43.73 seconds in the opening 250m, but increased its pace in the second half to take the lead.
Japan mounted a challenge in the final 250m, recording the fastest time among all competing teams at 47.616 seconds. South Korea held off the pursuit and crossed the finish line first.
