Xi Jinping: "China and the United States Have Reached a New Trade Agreement"; Calls for Caution on Taiwan

[Financial News] Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized expanded cooperation at a summit with the president of the United States, saying that the two countries had reached a new trade agreement. He asked the United States to handle the Taiwan issue cautiously.
According to China's state-run Xinhua News Agency and China Central Television (CCTV) on the 25th, Xi Jinping said at a summit with U.S. President Donald Trump held at the White House in Washington, D.C., on the 24th (local time), "The economic and trade teams of both sides have reached a new joint agreement" and "This is good news for the industries and people of both countries, as well as the global economy."
Xi Jinping stressed that "cooperation is a two-way street," saying the two sides should expand their list of areas for cooperation and reduce their list of issues to stabilize economic and trade relations. He also said the two countries should work to develop their economic and trade ties steadily on the basis of mutual concessions and benefits.
On the Taiwan issue, he urged the United States to oppose 'Taiwan independence' and handle related matters cautiously. He stressed, "China's position on safeguarding national reunification and territorial integrity is very clear."
China regards Taiwan as the foremost of its core interests and has strongly opposed U.S. arms sales to Taiwan and other related measures.
Regarding the war in Iran, he said he supported the United States and Iran returning to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), which they signed last June and which included an agreement to end the war. He said he hoped the two sides would reach a comprehensive agreement, including on the nuclear issue, through dialogue and negotiations and achieve peace as soon as possible.
In the field of artificial intelligence (AI), he emphasized dialogue, saying that competition and cooperation between the United States and China were both possible. Xi Jinping said, "The two sides should continue their AI dialogue, exchange views on its risks and benefits, and jointly prevent its misuse and abuse," adding that human control over AI technologies should also be maintained.
Xi Jinping described the "constructive strategic stability" between the United States and China as an important step toward coexistence and called on both countries to turn this vision into action.
Xinhua News Agency reported that the leaders also exchanged views on the Korean Peninsula, the situation in the Middle East, and the crisis in Ukraine. However, it did not disclose details of their discussions.
According to the agency, President Donald Trump also assessed that the economic and trade teams of the two countries had achieved new results, saying, "The two sides should continue their dialogue and reach better agreements." He also urged the two countries to continue dialogue and strengthen cooperation in the AI sector.
The leaders agreed to support each other in ensuring the successful hosting of this year's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and Group of Twenty (G20) summits, Xinhua News Agency reported.
