Trump Raises 'Superintelligence' in Front of Xi, Making It a Key Agenda Item at U.S.-China Summit

[Financial News | New York — Correspondent Lee Byung-chul]  U.S. President Donald Trump has placed security, advanced technology and artificial intelligence (AI) at the top of the agenda for his summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping. In particular, Trump's direct reference to "superintelligence (SI)," a term he prefers to use instead of AI, has made the extent to which the United States and China will discuss AI a key point of interest at the summit as they compete for global technological supremacy.
At a ceremony welcoming President Xi and his wife on their state visit to the White House on the 24th (local time), Trump said, "Today, we will discuss urgent issues related to security, technology and superintelligence." He added, "The decisions we make in these areas today can promote peace and prosperity for decades to come. I am confident that we can achieve a great deal historically if we focus on our common interests." In addition to trade, the U.S.-China summit is expected to cover a wide range of issues, including AI, advanced technology and security matters such as Taiwan.
Trump also highlighted progress in trade negotiations between the two countries. Referring to the talks they have pursued since their summit in Beijing last May, he said, "President Xi and I have made tremendous progress by working together on the challenges facing both countries." At the time, the two leaders agreed to build a relationship based on strategic stability and reciprocity.
Trump emphasized, "Our two countries have been working to create a more balanced trade relationship, including new market access for American farmers and ranchers." With the November deadline for the trade truce approaching, tariffs, China's supply of rare earths and U.S. export controls on advanced technology are viewed as the key economic issues at the summit.
He also highlighted the history of past cooperation rather than the fierce rivalry between the two countries. Trump said, "The pursuit of common interests has connected the people of our two countries across vast oceans, enormous distances and countless differences. We were also allies in World War II."
He specifically mentioned the Flying Tigers, a unit of American pilots that supported China's resistance against Japan in 1941 and 1942. He also referred to Gung Ho, a cooperative movement established in China during the Second Sino-Japanese War to produce military supplies, explaining that the U.S. Marine Corps later adopted the term to mean enthusiasm and cooperation.
Trump said, "Just as our people worked together to win that war, President Xi and I will continue working together to build a better future for both countries."
