Park Hyun-soo's race kept spectators on the edge of their seats until the very end. Starting in Lane 5, he held third place through the 1,000-meter mark while conserving his energy. His true strength emerged after the midpoint.
At the decisive 1,500-meter mark, he unleashed an explosive sprint to surge into second place behind Hong Kong. Although he was overtaken in the final 500 meters by Iran's Amirhossein Mahmoudpour Shahrestani, who mounted a fierce charge, losing by just 0.76 seconds, it was a flawless performance that fully demonstrated his status among Asia's elite. The gold medal went to Hong Kong's Chiu Hin-chun, who clocked 6:50.32.
This bronze medal carries particular emotional weight because of the grueling years of hardship Park Hyun-soo endured. He won gold in this event at the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games, only to suffer the misfortune of seeing it removed from the program at the subsequent Hangzhou Asian Games.
After moving up to the heavyweight division, he began preparing for a return to the top by undertaking an extreme weight cut of more than 15 kg when the lightweight event was restored ahead of the Nagoya Games.

On top of that, the Japanese organizing committee's substandard administration was enough to drain the athletes' energy. When shuttle buses failed to arrive, athletes had to pay hundreds of thousands of won out of their own pockets to take taxis. The men's pair of Moon Jong Won and Kang Min-sung, as well as the women's double sculls team of Kim Seung-hyun and Park Ji-yeon, finished fourth after falling short of third place by eight seconds and 3.14 seconds, respectively. Kim Ji-sun placed fifth in the lightweight women's single sculls, while the men's quadruple sculls team finished sixth to conclude its campaign at the Games.
