The final unfolded as a nail-biting Korea-Japan showdown from start to finish. Park Si-eun, assigned to lane 5 after posting the second-fastest overall time in the preliminaries at 2:26.57, immediately engaged in a breathless battle for the lead with Japan’s home favorite Kotomi Kato in lane 4.


The decisive moment came in the final 50 meters. Park Si-eun unleashed a ferocious late surge and rapidly closed in on Kato. After a fierce pursuit filled with splashing water, the two swimmers touched the pads almost simultaneously. The scoreboard showed Kato’s time as 2:22.57, leaving just 0.12 seconds between her and Park Si-eun. China’s Zhu Leizhu took the bronze medal in 2:25.51.
After finishing fifth in the earlier 100-meter breaststroke final and vowing to bounce back, Park Si-eun finally made her mark in her signature event, the 200 meters. She produced a silver-medal performance and savored the thrill of winning her first Asian Games medal.
Following Kim Young-beom in the men’s 100-meter freestyle and Hwang Sun-woo in the men’s 200-meter freestyle, Park Si-eun delivered the Korean pool-swimming team’s third silver medal at these Games. Missing the gold by 0.12 seconds left a deep sense of regret, but after setting a new Korean record, her powerful finishing touch is already aimed beyond Asia and at the bigger global stage.
