"Do You Have an Exhibitionism Problem?" 'Beach Volleyball Goddess' Shin Ji-eun Spikes to First Asian Games Win, Defying Trolls

[Financial News] The Shin Ji-eun (25)–Kim Jung-ah (24) pair, members of South Korea's national beach volleyball team, earned a valuable first win at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, keeping their hopes of reaching the round of 16 alive.
The Shin Ji-eun–Kim Jung-ah pair defeated Malaysia's Goh Yuheng–Rachel Yujie pair 2–1 in sets (21–23, 21–15, 18–16) in the second women's Group D match at Hekinan Ryokuchi Beach Court in Japan at 10 a.m. local time on the 20th.
They made an uneasy start after losing the opening set in a tight deuce battle, but comfortably took the second set before finally turning the match around with their focus intact during a nerve-racking deuce battle in the third. South Korea, which had suffered a shock defeat to Thailand in the opening match, reversed its momentum with the win and improved to 1–1 in the group stage.
This victory is particularly noteworthy because of the private struggles endured by Shin Ji-eun, the team's marquee player. Combining skill with striking looks, Shin drew considerable attention online as a so-called "beauty athlete," but she has constantly faced both intense public interest and harsh scrutiny.
Her public profile attracted sponsors, allowing her to continue her athletic career, but some netizens' misguided views made life difficult for her. During a recent television appearance, Shin also spoke about the hardships caused by misconceptions surrounding beach volleyball uniforms and excessively malicious comments.
At the time, she said, "Wearing a bikini is a choice, not a regulation, but I wear one because I consider it part of the sport's tradition and style. Yet some people hurl insulting remarks like, 'Do you have an exhibitionism problem?' and 'You look like a bar girl.'"

But Shin silenced the controversy surrounding her through her performance on the court. Nor could the harsh reality of a niche sport dampen her passion. Each international competition required enormous expenses of 6 million to 7 million won, so she worked various part-time jobs, including as a sports instructor, while continuing to represent South Korea. Although chemistry between partners is crucial in a two-person event, she remained unfazed despite the difficult circumstances, with her partner changing nine times over the past eight years.
Shin played as an outside hitter in indoor volleyball during her school years, but made a bold move to switch to beach volleyball ahead of the Korean V-League women's draft. Beginning with the 2019 International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Daegu event, she competed at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games and established herself as a leading figure in South Korean beach volleyball. At the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics, she also worked as a commentator.
Shin Ji-eun's spike, which delivered another victory at the Asian Games after breaking through countless prejudices and harsh conditions, was more powerful and sharper than any malicious comment aimed at her.
