Jensen Huang Tells Geoffrey Hinton: "Stop Making Such Predictions" About AI Doomsday

[Financial News] Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, criticized the "godfather of AI," saying that warnings that artificial intelligence could lead to humanity's destruction lack scientific grounds and telling him, "Stop making such predictions."
In an interview with The New York Times (NYT)'s The Ezra Klein Show released on the 23rd (local time), Huang addressed Geoffrey Hinton's claim that the possibility of AI-driven social collapse was about 10%. "I would say such remarks are irresponsible," Huang said. He added, "None of his predictions have been accurate so far."
"A probability of 10% is not based on science," Huang said. "Something does not become science merely because a scientist said it. Such predictions are harmful," he added pointedly.
He continued, "You should not assume that sounding the alarm is beneficial to society," and stressed, "We all need to become wiser and more mature and base our views on objective evidence and science."
Professor Geoffrey Hinton received the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics as a pioneer in research on artificial neural networks and deep learning, which form the foundation of current AI development. At several recent public events, he has said that he estimates the probability of AI wiping out humanity at 10% to 20%.
More recently, during a closed-door briefing for members of the U.S. Congress, he warned that Congress could lose control if it failed to establish AI safeguards within a year.
By contrast, Huang has maintained that forecasts suggesting AI will destroy humanity do not help industry, society or governments.
