[Financial News] U.S. President Donald Trump welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping, who was visiting the United States for a state visit, saying, "President Xi is a great leader," Xinhua News Agency reported.
According to Xinhua News Agency on the 24th, President Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan, arrived in Washington, D.C., on a private jet on the 23rd local time, where they were received by President Donald Trump and Melania Trump. Xinhua News Agency reported that President Trump said, "I am very pleased to welcome President Xi and Madame Peng to Washington," adding, "This is a visit that the whole world is watching."
He continued, "President Xi is a great leader, and this is a great moment," adding, "I look forward to exchanging views in depth with President Xi and promoting the development of relations between our two countries."
Xinhua News Agency did not report President Xi Jinping's remarks at the welcoming ceremony, instead reporting only the contents of his written speech.
In his speech, President Xi Jinping said, "China and the United States are both great countries, and the Chinese and American peoples are both great peoples," adding, "China and the United States should prioritize cooperation, pursue competition within proper bounds, and work to ensure that differences remain manageable."
President Xi Jinping also said, "The two countries should be partners, not rivals," adding, "Achieving the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and making America great again can certainly proceed in parallel."
He added, "When President Trump visited China in May this year, we agreed to build a constructive strategic stability relationship between our two countries, setting a strategic direction for the future development of China-U.S. relations."
He emphasized, "Although the world is developing and times are changing, the historical logic that China and the United States must coexist peacefully remains unchanged," adding, "The desire of the peoples of both countries to engage in friendly exchanges and the international community's universal expectations for China and the United States also remain unchanged."
He also said he hoped to discuss major issues concerning relations between the two countries and the global situation with President Trump and expand exchanges and cooperation.
President Xi Jinping's visit to the United States came about four months after President Trump's visit to China in May, taking place as a reciprocal visit. Xinhua News Agency reported that during the welcoming ceremony, American children presented bouquets to President Xi Jinping and his wife, while an honor guard lined both sides of the red carpet to pay tribute.
