[Financial News] Daewoong Pharmaceutical’s gastroesophageal reflux disease treatment Pexuclu is entering the Indonesian market. The company plans to step up its efforts to target the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) market, using Indonesia, one of Southeast Asia’s largest pharmaceutical markets, as a base.
Daewoong Pharmaceutical announced on the 23rd that it had launched its in-house-developed gastroesophageal reflux disease treatment, Pexuclu 40mg (active ingredient: fexuprazan hydrochloride), in Indonesia.
Pexuclu has been approved in Indonesia for the treatment of erosive gastroesophageal reflux disease. Daewoong Pharmaceutical plans to expand local prescriptions by highlighting the drug’s rapid onset of action, stable acid-suppression effects and ability to control nighttime symptoms.
Indonesia is the world’s fourth-most populous country, with approximately 280 million people, and has the largest economy in Southeast Asia. Demand for gastroesophageal reflux disease treatments is also growing across Southeast Asia, particularly in Indonesia.
According to Indonesia’s national guidelines for managing gastroesophageal reflux disease, the prevalence of the condition in the general population is approximately 9.35%. IQVIA estimates that Indonesia’s anti-ulcer drug market was worth approximately $164.3 million in 2025, or about KRW 235 billion, growing at an annual average rate of 6.8% from 2023 to 2025.
Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) currently dominate Indonesia’s anti-ulcer drug market, but treatments in the potassium-competitive acid blocker (P-CAB) class are also growing rapidly. The P-CAB market has expanded 8.9-fold over the past two years, with prescriptions continuing to increase at an early stage.
The global P-CAB market is also expected to grow. According to BCC Research, the global P-CAB market is projected to expand from approximately KRW 1.554 trillion in 2025 to about KRW 1.876 trillion in 2030.
Pexuclu’s overseas expansion is also accelerating. The drug has entered 30 countries, secured product approvals in 16 of them, and been launched in eight countries, including Mexico, India and the Philippines. Daewoong Pharmaceutical is also preparing to launch the drug in China.
In South Korea, the company added an indication for Helicobacter pylori eradication therapy and is conducting clinical studies to expand the drug’s indications to include gastric ulcer treatment and maintenance therapy for erosive gastroesophageal reflux disease. In Indonesia, it plans to conduct a Korea-Indonesia multinational Phase 3 clinical trial to expand the indication to gastric ulcer treatment.
Park Sung-soo, CEO of Daewoong Pharmaceutical, said, "Indonesia is a key market in Southeast Asia and a springboard for expanding into the ASEAN market. Based on the clinical evidence and regulatory experience accumulated in South Korea and overseas, we will expand Pexuclu’s prescription base in Indonesia and continue its growth in major overseas markets, including China."
