[Financial News] Independent lawmaker Han Dong-hoon criticized the Ministry of National Defense on the 23rd for announcing that two people were injured in a landmine explosion in the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), down from the initially reported three.
In a Facebook post that day, Han said, "Yesterday, the Ministry of National Defense reduced the number of wounded service members from a North Korean landmine incident from three to two." He added, "The Ministry of National Defense said the reason was that 'one person was not seriously injured.' They are trying to downplay the incident by any means necessary. They are looking over their shoulder at North Korea and making a fool of the public."
He went on to lash out, saying, "Are you manipulating even the number of our young wounded service members because you are afraid that Kim Jong Un might expose that he received Lee Jae Myung's remittances to North Korea? Is the Ministry of National Defense out of its mind?"
The Republic of Korea Joint Chiefs of Staff (ROK JCS) had earlier changed the number of injured personnel in an announcement at a routine briefing the previous day.
At the time, a reporter asked, "The military said on the 21st that three officers were injured, but today's figure is two. Please explain why the announcement was adjusted." Col. Jang Do-young, public affairs director of the Republic of Korea Joint Chiefs of Staff, replied, "When the incident first occurred, we announced that three officers had been injured."
He explained, "However, medical staff confirmed that the two officers transported by helicopter had suffered serious injuries and had completed surgery. The third officer was confirmed not to have suffered a serious injury, so we announced that two officers had been seriously injured."
On the 21st, an incident believed to have been caused by a landmine explosion occurred at a frontline unit of the Army's 25th Division in the DMZ.
One military officer's ankle was severed, while another suffered a fracture.
The remaining officer was reported to have suffered an injury that was not serious.
