[Financial News] Kakao Group is accelerating efforts to build a Korean won stablecoin ecosystem by joining forces with domestic and overseas companies in the platform, financial, and digital asset sectors. The group plans to establish a foundation for cooperation spanning issuance, payments, and remittances, with the aim of launching real-world services in line with future regulatory developments.
On the 23rd, Kakao Group (Kakao, KakaoBank, and Kakao Pay) announced that it had signed memorandums of understanding with major domestic and overseas companies, including Grab, Southeast Asia's leading platform company; SCB X (SCBX), a Thai financial holding company; Kyobo Life Insurance; and Bonanza Factory, to explore cooperation and opportunities in digital asset businesses.
Since last year, Kakao Group has sequentially established partnerships with companies across various industries, strengthening the business and technological foundations of its digital asset operations. In anticipation of future legislation and regulatory frameworks, the group is proactively preparing a collaborative system covering the issuance and distribution of Korean won stablecoins, payments, remittances, and financial services so these efforts can quickly lead to real-world services.
In December last year, Kakao Group signed separate memorandums of understanding with Grab, Southeast Asia's leading super app, and Thailand's financial holding company SCBX in the digital asset sector. Both agreements were aimed at examining opportunities for digital asset businesses connecting the South Korean and Southeast Asian markets.
Kakao Group is working with Grab on the issuance and distribution of Korean won stablecoins, as well as the development of related services, regional expansion strategies, and exchanges of technical and operational capabilities.
Kakao Group is also cooperating with SCBX in various areas, including the development of digital asset services such as overseas payments and remittances and the exchange of technical and operational capabilities. The two sides are identifying business models that can be pursued in compliance with relevant laws and financial regulations in South Korea and Thailand, while discussing service expansion across South Korea and Southeast Asia.
In South Korea, Kakao Group is broadening the foundation for using Korean won stablecoins through agreements with major companies in various industries, including finance and digital assets. Since March this year, Kakao Group and Kyobo Life Insurance have been working together on initiatives, including proof-of-concept projects, to provide financial services using digital assets and advance related business. They are connecting capabilities across platforms, banking, payments, and insurance to develop concrete applications for digital assets.
Kakao Group has also signed a memorandum of understanding with a company specializing in digital assets. In April last year, it began working with Bonanza Factory under an agreement covering the joint development of virtual asset-related services and affiliated services. From the early stages, the group has been strengthening its technological capabilities to design Korean won stablecoins that account for safety and reliability, including anti-money-laundering (AML) measures, while expanding digital asset services.
Yun Ho-young, CEO of KakaoBank and co-head of Kakao Group's stablecoin task force, said, "For a new financial service such as a stablecoin to take root in everyday life, collective efforts that transcend national and industry boundaries are necessary. We will create innovative services by combining Kakao Group's platform and financial-service capabilities with partnerships with diverse domestic and overseas partners."
Kakao Group plans to build an ecosystem that organically connects the issuance, distribution, payments, remittances, and financial services of Korean won stablecoins. It will also continue identifying various real-world use cases for digital assets and opportunities for global expansion.
Meanwhile, Kakao Group signed a memorandum of understanding with Circle in July. Under the agreement, the two companies are exploring ways to leverage Kakao Group's digital platform and financial services ecosystem together with Circle's blockchain and global payments systems and its experience in developing digital asset infrastructure. Kakao Group also signed a memorandum of understanding with Fireblocks on the 22nd of this month, expanding its global alliance to build a digital asset ecosystem.
