Samsung C&T Builds Global SMR Partnership, Accelerating Push into European and UK Markets

[Financial News] Samsung C&T is joining forces with GE Vernova, Hitachi, and SGE to develop a small modular reactor (SMR) fleet business in Central and Eastern Europe and the United Kingdom.
Samsung C&T’s Construction Group said on the 23rd that it had signed a memorandum of understanding with GE Vernova, Hitachi, and SGE to develop the market for BWRX-300 SMRs and identify commercial opportunities. The agreement was signed on the 22nd in New York during the Atlantic Council’s Nuclear Energy Policy Summit, held as a side event of the United Nations General Assembly.
Under the agreement, the four companies will combine their core capabilities in nuclear technology and industry expertise, global engineering, procurement and construction (EPC), and business development in Europe. They plan to establish a strong business model for repeatedly deploying standardized BWRX-300 fleets across multiple countries. The BWRX-300 is a 300-megawatt-class SMR developed based on boiling water reactor technology. Its simplified and standardized design is intended to maximize efficiency. The first unit is currently under construction in Canada and undergoing technology verification.
Specifically, GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GVH), a joint venture between GE Vernova and Hitachi, will provide the design and technology for the 300-megawatt-class SMR. Hitachi will contribute its nuclear technology and robust supply chain capabilities. Samsung C&T will leverage its extensive experience executing large-scale nuclear power and energy infrastructure projects to provide global EPC capabilities, while SGE will lead the development of BWRX-300 fleet projects in Europe, including Poland and the United Kingdom.
SGE has secured a decision in principle for 26 BWRX-300 units in Poland and is developing sites for the first 14 units. In the United Kingdom, it is also pursuing a fleet of 14 units and has entered the in-depth review stage of a preliminary regulatory assessment by a state-owned agency. Based on this partnership, the four companies plan to actively identify additional business opportunities across Central and Eastern Europe and the United Kingdom, contributing to Europe’s energy security and industrial competitiveness.
Kim Jung-wook, head of Samsung C&T’s Overseas Business Division, said, "We are working with GVH to deploy the BWRX-300 and recently achieved meaningful results at Studsvik in Sweden," adding, "It is meaningful to open a new chapter in Europe’s SMR business together with GE Vernova, Hitachi, and SGE."
