[Financial News] An officer assigned to the Republic of Korea Army 25th Infantry Division, where a suspected mine explosion occurred during a search operation in the DMZ, was found dead, prompting the military and police to launch an investigation.
According to a report by Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) on the 22nd, Captain A, who served at the headquarters of the Republic of Korea Army 25th Infantry Division, was found dead in his quarters that morning.
Unit members reportedly went to his quarters after becoming concerned when Captain A failed to report for work and discovered him there. No signs of criminal activity were found at the scene.
The day before, on the 21st, a suspected mine exploded during an operation to clear a search route in the DMZ. Three officers sustained moderate to serious injuries, including the battalion commander, whose ankle was severed.
Captain A held a position at the division headquarters that involved planning military operations, but he was not believed to have served in a branch directly involved in the DMZ search operation.
Captain A reportedly finished his duty shift on the morning of the explosion and left work. After receiving word of the incident while resting, he returned to work in the early afternoon and went back to his quarters about two hours later.
No direct link has been confirmed so far between the DMZ explosion and Captain A's death. Military authorities and the Gyeonggi Northern Provincial Police Agency are investigating the exact circumstances of his death.
