TS and Busan Metropolitan City Government to Share Hazardous-Materials Transport Vehicle Accident Information in Real Time

[Financial News] The Korea Transportation Safety Authority (TS) and Busan Metropolitan City Government will link real-time operation and accident information for hazardous-materials transport vehicles with CCTV footage from across the city. The initiative is intended to speed up situational assessments and initial disaster-control efforts when a spill occurs in areas with heavy hazardous-materials vehicle traffic, such as the Port of Busan.
TS announced on the 23rd that it had signed a memorandum of understanding with Busan Metropolitan City Government on the 22nd on sharing future transportation and safety information and advancing traffic safety culture.
Through its Hazardous Materials Transport Safety Management Center, TS monitors in real time about 15,000 vehicles that are required to be equipped with terminal devices and transport hazardous materials and designated waste. It uses sensor-based terminals to determine whether an accident has occurred and, once an accident is confirmed, circulates information related to hazardous materials to relevant agencies.
Under the agreement, TS will provide Busan Metropolitan City Government in real time with operation and accident information on hazardous-materials transport vehicles entering Busan. Busan Metropolitan City Government will share CCTV information from within its jurisdiction to support a rapid initial response and efficient disaster-control operations when a hazardous-materials spill occurs.
The two agencies plan to focus their cooperation on quickly assessing accident situations and minimizing the spread of damage, particularly in the area around the Port of Busan, where hazardous-materials transport vehicles are heavily concentrated.
Yong-Sik Jung, chairman of TS, said, "This agreement will serve as an important opportunity to strengthen our response system for hazardous-materials spills and traffic accidents." He added, "To protect the lives and property of the people, we will actively cooperate with Busan Metropolitan City Government to create a safer road environment."
