[Financial News] The story of a bus driver who was assaulted by an intoxicated passenger while operating a bus has sparked public outrage.
According to JTBC's *Sageonbanjang* on the 22nd, at around 8 p.m. on the 16th, a middle-aged man seated on a bus driven by A, who had been working as a bus driver in Busan for two years, slipped and fell under his seat.
At the time, A was carrying about 10 passengers and heading toward a bus stop on a downhill road. Apart from two passengers who had stood up to get off, everyone else was seated without being shaken. As the bus was traveling peacefully, the man suddenly slipped, adjusted his position, and began swearing.
The woman accompanying the man restrained him and told A that everything was fine. However, the atmosphere quickly turned hostile again when the man picked a fight with some students, saying, "What are you looking at? I'll smash your heads in!" A explained that the man appeared to be intoxicated at the time.
The woman tried to stop him, and the two began arguing. The man then suddenly took out his anger on A, the bus driver, saying, "This is the driver's fault! I was hurt because of that driver, so why should I just sit here and do nothing?"
The man approached the driver's seat, shouted at A to stop the bus, and hurled abuse at him. Even as his companion tried to dissuade him, he continued arguing, saying, "Didn't you get hurt because he was driving improperly?" As the man's confrontation continued, A called the police and stopped the bus. But when the buses behind him began honking, he confirmed that the man was holding onto a handrail and slowly moved the bus forward.
The woman, who had been trying to restrain the man all along, suddenly began arguing, saying, "Why did you start moving when I wasn't holding onto the handrail?" The man then staggered forward on his own, clutched his lower back, approached the driver's seat, and struck A on the back of the head.
A explained that he had moved the bus because the vehicles behind him could not get through. The woman reportedly protested, saying, "Are the vehicles behind us more important? Isn't protecting the passengers more important?" Concerned that the situation might escalate, A eventually had the other passengers get off the bus.
Even afterward, the man insisted to the police who arrived at the scene that he had fallen because the driver had been driving recklessly and said he would file a report. After reviewing the dashcam footage shown by A, however, the police explained that the man could face charges including obstruction of business, assault, and insult.
A said he went to the emergency room after finishing his route that day because he was dizzy and experiencing vomiting. Although he returned to work after taking a day off, he said he was suffering from severe trauma. He added, "I was notified on the 21st that a police officer had been assigned to the case," and said, "I hope he receives an appropriate punishment."
