United States President Donald Trump said on the 22nd (local time) that direct talks had taken place between the United States and Iran.
According to foreign media outlets including Financial Times (FT), President Trump said that United States officials and an Iranian delegation had met on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. He added, "It was a very good meeting," and said additional talks would be held on the 23rd.
During a summit with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Trump responded to reporters' questions by saying, "The talks with Iran went very well. They ended an hour ago," and added, "It was a meeting that lasted three hours."
Iran was reportedly represented by President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, while United States was represented by Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff and his eldest son-in-law, Jared Kushner.
Trump claimed, "Iran has two choices. One is complete destruction, and the other is the potential to become great," adding, "Iran can become a great nation (if it simply reaches an agreement with the United States)."
He added, "The talks were very productive. Additional talks are scheduled in the very near future." He also said, "They had very good talks. We'll see what comes of it," while emphasizing, "The clear thing is that reaching an agreement is also in Iran's interest."
Earlier, in a speech to the United Nations General Assembly, Trump said the United States had two choices. He emphasized that the choices facing the United States were "whether to reach an agreement with Iran and have them rebuild and make a country far greater than ever before" or "whether to quickly annihilate Iran and never again give it the opportunity to kill people and destroy countries." He added, "I believe an agreement will be reached immediately after the (midterm) elections."
