Kookmin University Student Lee Chaeyeong Wins Top Prize in Hangul Typeface Design Competition

[Financial News] Lee Chaeyeong, a doctoral student at Kookmin University’s Graduate School of Techno Design, won the Top Prize—the Chairman’s Award of the King Sejong the Great Memorial Society—in the Design Typeface category of the 33rd Hangul Typeface Design Competition.
According to Kookmin University on the 22nd, Lee Chaeyeong’s submitted typeface was inspired by lettering used in old newspaper advertisements and redesigned with a modern sensibility. It features a narrow width, emphasizes the contrast between horizontal and vertical stroke weights, and incorporates pointed flourishes at the ends of the letters in a balanced way to create a sleek yet refined impression. The judging panel praised the work for capturing Hangul’s aesthetic balance while drawing on the Gothic style.
Lee plans to expand the submitted work into a complete font set containing 2,780 characters and officially release it commercially in the future. Lee said, "I am delighted to receive such a meaningful award in the year marking the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Hangul Day," adding, "I am very interested in reinterpreting old typefaces in a modern way, so receiving such a favorable evaluation makes this award especially meaningful."
Meanwhile, the Hangul Typeface Design Competition, jointly hosted by the King Sejong the Great Memorial Society and the Sandoll Cultural Foundation, is held annually to enhance the artistic value of Hangul typefaces and discover new designs. This year’s winning works are scheduled to be exhibited publicly in October.
