【Financial News, Jeju—Reporter Jeong Yong-bok】 The Jeju Content Promotion Institute, which led the first business agreement between Netflix and a local government and supported the production of global content in Jeju, including 'When Life Gives You Tangerines,' has received a commendation from the Minister of the Interior and Safety in recognition of its achievements in management innovation at a local public institution and regional development. Its support for content production was cited as a major achievement for linking the local economy and jobs to overseas expansion.
According to the Jeju Content Promotion Institute on the 22nd, the institute received a commendation from the Minister of the Interior and Safety on the 17th for its contributions to the 2026 development of local public institutions.
The commendation is awarded to individuals and organizations that have contributed to management innovation and regional development at local public institutions, as well as the implementation of government policies.
The institute's flagship achievement is the business agreement between Jeju Province and Netflix. It connected the two parties and established a cooperation framework for content production and promotion, as well as tourism revitalization.
The agreement between Jeju Province and Netflix was Netflix's first official business agreement with a local government in South Korea. Rather than merely using Jeju as a filming location, the parties established a cooperation model linking content production with local industries and tourism.
Support for the production of globally successful works was also recognized as an achievement. The institute supported filming and production in Jeju for content including the Netflix series 'When Life Gives You Tangerines.' According to figures compiled by the institute, the resulting production-induced economic impact was 21.5 billion won, while the induced value added totaled 8.8 billion won.
The institute explained that content production generated local consumption and industrial activity in areas such as lodging, transportation, equipment and labor, rather than stopping at the provision of filming locations.

In the workforce and employment sector, the institute reported training 958 content professionals and creating 743 related jobs. This is noteworthy because developing content as a new regional industry, rather than relying primarily on tourism and services, requires a job base that enables creative and production personnel to settle in Jeju.
Local companies also made gains in entering global markets. Artnova, a company supported by the Jeju Content Promotion Institute, jointly won the CES 2026 Best of Innovation Award for participating in a project that transformed Jeju legends into AI-based real-time content. It was an example of local content combining Jeju's unique stories with advanced technology and earning recognition for its competitiveness on the world's largest technology exhibition stage.
The institute is also expanding commercialization results, including overseas contracts and game development agreements, while supporting local animation and content companies in participating in overseas markets.
The commendation is also significant because it shows that the focus of regional content policy is broadening from production-cost support to company growth, workforce training, job creation and global distribution.
In Jeju, efforts to combine content and AI have also recently gained momentum. On the 15th, the Jeju Content Promotion Institute established a cooperation framework with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Megazone Cloud. It is preparing a program to provide AI solutions to companies moving into the Jeju Content Business Support Center, which is scheduled to open in 2027.
The plan is to connect the planning, production and commercialization of Jeju content companies by adding AI production technology and cloud infrastructure to existing efforts to attract filming projects and support production.
Kang Min-bu, president of the Jeju Content Promotion Institute, said, "This commendation recognizes the institute's competitiveness, as well as the achievements of Jeju content. We will pursue management innovation in line with the changing content environment and contribute to the development of residents and the local community."
