Gangdong District Dementia Family Support Center Receives Commendation for Contributions to Dementia Prevention and Management

[Financial News] The Gangdong District Dementia Family Support Center was selected as an exemplary institution for its contributions to dementia prevention and management on the occasion of the 19th Dementia Overcoming Day and received a commendation from the Minister of Health and Welfare.
Gangdong District announced the news on the 21st, explaining that the award recognized the center's efforts to reduce the caregiving burden on dementia patients and their families and support their return to daily life.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) selects and honors individuals and organizations that actively participate in dementia management programs and contribute to overcoming dementia in their communities. The Gangdong District Dementia Family Support Center was highly regarded for helping strengthen a community-based care system that supports not only dementia patients but also their families.
Gangdong District opened the nation's first dementia family support center in February 2023 and has since provided professional, systematic care support for dementia patients and their families.
Unlike dementia relief centers, which focus on prevention and management for patients, the Gangdong District Dementia Family Support Center focuses on easing the burden on family members who care for patients nearby and helping them return to their daily lives. It provides tailored services based on each family's caregiving situation and needs, helping dementia patients and their families live stably in the community.
The center operates a range of programs, including counseling for families of dementia patients, caregiving skills training, a café-style respite space, and in-home care services for older adults with dementia. These programs help strengthen families' caregiving abilities, ease their emotional burden, and reduce gaps in care.
Lee Soo-hee, mayor of Gangdong District, said, "Dementia is not just a problem for patients and their families, but an important social challenge that the entire community must address together. Centering our efforts on the Dementia Family Support Center, we will reduce the caregiving burden and build a system in which every resident can receive the support they need, making Gangdong District a place free from worries about dementia."
