Jeju Firefighters Conduct Complex Disaster Drill Simulating Wildfire Spread After Light Aircraft Crash

【Financial News Jeju = Jeong Yong-bok】 A complex disaster response drill was conducted under a scenario in which a light aircraft crashed on a Jeju oreum, sparking a wildfire that spread in strong winds and left visitors stranded.
According to Jeju Eastern Fire Station on the 22nd, the 2026 Q3 Emergency Rescue Control Team No-Notice Drill was held the previous day in and around Gasiri, Pyoseon-myeon, Seogwipo City.
The drill began under a scenario in which a light aircraft crashed on an oreum in Gasiri, starting a wildfire. It depicted a complex disaster in which strong winds spread the flames, leaving visitors stranded and causing multiple casualties.
At the site, responders conducted a practical review of the Emergency Rescue Control Team's procedures, from initial disaster assessment to rescue operations, triage and treatment of multiple casualties, and on-site command and control.
When an aircraft accident, wildfire and multiple casualties occur simultaneously, firefighting, rescue and emergency medical responses must be carried out at the same time. That makes initial on-site command and coordination of roles among agencies especially important.
The drill also served as a preliminary check of the complex disaster response system ahead of the Safety Korea Exercise for Disaster Response scheduled for October 28.
Jeju Eastern Fire Station plans to address improvements identified in field response during the no-notice drill and incorporate them into the Safety Korea Exercise and actual disaster response.
Kang Seong-bu, chief of Jeju Eastern Fire Station, said, "Because complex disasters can change rapidly, initial assessment and coordinated on-site command are critical." He added, "We will establish a swift and systematic on-site response system through repeated, field-oriented drills."
