Bae Kyung-hoon Draws the Line at Slowing AI Development: "We Will Rapidly Develop a World-Class AI for Cybersecurity"

[Financial News] Bae Kyung-hoon, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT, said on the 22nd, "The goal of the project to develop an AI model specialized in cybersecurity is to boldly and rapidly develop a world-class model that can be deployed immediately in real-world security operations to respond to the cyber threats we face."
At a briefing on the launch of a project to develop an AI model specialized in cybersecurity, held that day at The Grand Lotte Seoul in Sogong-dong, Seoul, Bae said, "Establishing AI security sovereignty and securing our own AI security model as a strategic asset for national security are essential. Even amid recent calls to slow the pace of AI development, whether a country possesses frontier AI capabilities will determine its future. We must continue taking bold challenges rather than slowing down."
He added, "The government will work closely with the consortium developing the AI model specialized in cybersecurity and actively support all aspects of the project, including infrastructure, competitiveness, utilization and expansion." He also urged the public and private sectors to join forces, saying, "I ask the public and private sectors to work together to create Korean AI that leads innovation on a foundation of safety and trust through this project."
The briefing was held to hear the development plans of the NAVER Cloud-led consortium selected for the project and discuss ways to cooperate.
NAVER Cloud, the consortium's lead company, said it aims to develop a trusted, homegrown AI model for cybersecurity. By combining field data from domestic security companies with experts' defensive know-how, it plans to build a cyber shield that can be deployed immediately at critical national facilities and industrial sites.
The ensuing open discussion focused on strategies to strengthen the competitiveness of the AI model specialized in cybersecurity and requests for government support, with consortium members leading the discussion.
