NSSC Opens Kori and Saeul Nuclear Safety Information Sharing Centers

[Financial News] The Nuclear Safety and Security Commission (NSSC) announced on the 22nd that the Kori Nuclear Safety Information Sharing Center in Gijang County, Busan, and the Saeul Nuclear Safety Information Sharing Center in Ulju County would each hold an opening ceremony and begin full-scale operations.
The NSSC has been working to establish information-sharing centers equipped with specialized facilities and personnel to disclose nuclear safety information more efficiently and transparently to residents living near nuclear facilities, in accordance with the Act on the Disclosure and Communication of Nuclear Safety Information. Through a public call for applications in June, it initially selected four locations—Kori, Saeul, Wolseong and Yeonggwang—and opened two of them first on this day. The remaining two centers are also expected to open within the year without delay once construction is completed.
The information-sharing centers are equipped with reading rooms for residents, online information-search booths, nuclear safety information archives and spaces for communication with residents. Going forward, they will serve as key hubs for communication with local communities by disclosing nuclear safety information, holding briefings for local residents, operating locally tailored content and supporting the operation of nuclear safety councils.
Won Ho Choe, chairman of the NSSC, said, "The centers are significant because they establish open channels of communication through which residents living near nuclear power plants can easily and conveniently access the nuclear safety information they need on site." He added, "We will continue to build local communities' trust in nuclear safety through proactive information disclosure and communication tailored to residents' level of understanding."
Meanwhile, the NSSC plans to continue expanding the information-sharing centers. Following an additional public call for applications in the first half of next year, it will install more centers in areas surrounding nuclear facilities in three regions, including Gochang County, Uljin County and Daejeon.
