KFE Strengthens Design Capabilities for a Korean Fusion Reactor

[Financial News] The Korea Institute of Fusion Energy (KFE) announced on the 22nd that it will strengthen its capabilities to realize fusion energy by continuing to play a key role in designing a Korean innovative fusion reactor and at the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER).
KFE said that Dr. Kim Jae-hyun has served as head of the Innovative Fusion Reactor Design Group since August 1, while Deputy Director Yoon Si-woo began serving as chair of ITER's Management Advisory Committee (MAC). Led by its new head, Kim Jae-hyun, the Innovative Fusion Reactor Design Group is working to develop the concept of a Korean innovative fusion reactor and secure core design technologies and integrated design capabilities.
Dr. Kim had previously led the AI-Based Design Integration Group within the Innovative Fusion Reactor Design Group, conducting research on fusion reactor design and the integration of designs across various fields using AI and digital technologies. He will now oversee the group's research, including the conceptual design of a Korean innovative fusion reactor and the integration of designs across different fields. Dr. Yang Hyeong-yeol, who previously led the group, currently serves as project director of the K-Moonshot Fusion Project.
KFE's international role at ITER is also continuing. Since August 1, Deputy Director Yoon Si-woo has served as chair of the ITER MAC, succeeding former chair Hyeon Gon Lee. Dr. Hyeon Gon Lee took office as head of the ITER Korea Project Team on the same day and oversees Korea's ITER project.
The ITER MAC reviews major management and operational issues related to the ITER project and advises the ITER Council. Representatives and experts from seven members participate in the committee. The chair leads the committee's discussions and coordinates views among the member countries.
KFE plans to continue strengthening its design capabilities for an innovative fusion reactor while maintaining its international role in discussions on major management issues related to the ITER project.
KFE reorganized its operations under the leadership of Hyeon Gon Lee, head of the ITER Korea Project Team, to actively apply the technologies and experience gained through the ITER project in Korea and internalize core technologies.
Young-Kook Oh, president of KFE, said, "To realize fusion energy, it is important to develop both domestic capabilities to design future fusion reactors and our role on the international stage, including ITER. We will work to ensure that Korea's fusion research takes another step forward based on the expertise accumulated in each field."
