[Financial News]  A massive doping scandal has erupted on the badminton courts just before the 2026 20th Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya. Pitchamon Opatniput, Thailand's flagship prospect who has cited South Korea's badminton queen An Se-young as her role model and is also familiar to Korean fans, has been flagged in a banned-substance test. In an unprecedented turn of events, her participation in the Games has been blocked.
The International Testing Agency (ITA) announced through its official channels on the 21st local time that a sample collected from Pitchamon returned an adverse analytical finding (AAF), with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)-prohibited substance furosemide detected. The sample was obtained on the 17th during an out-of-competition, unannounced doping test, after Pitchamon had arrived in Nagoya, Japan, to compete in the Games.
Furosemide, the substance that has derailed Pitchamon, is a powerful diuretic. Although it can be used for short-term weight loss, it sharply increases urine output, diluting the concentration of other drugs remaining in the body and hindering their detection. For that reason, WADA classifies it as a "diuretic and masking agent" and strictly prohibits athletes from taking it both during competition and outside competition.



Following the doping finding, Pitchamon was immediately provisionally suspended from the Asian Games. She is now effectively ruled out of the women's badminton team event against China, which was scheduled for the 22nd.
Born in 2007, Pitchamon emerged as a next-generation star three years ago after winning the World Junior Championships. Her exceptional skills and striking looks have made her enormously popular among fans in Thailand, who affectionately call her the "Thai princess." She also drew attention after saying in a media interview, "I respect An Se-young, the world's best player, more than anyone."
Thailand's badminton team was thrown into turmoil by the unexpected doping controversy involving its ace. Thailand is reportedly planning to challenge the disciplinary action before the Anti-Doping Division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). However, the 19-year-old prospect's dream of breaking through on the senior stage while competing in Nagoya is now at risk of being shattered by the devastating stain of a doping scandal.
