Chung Jeom-sik on the 'Kim Seung-won petition' controversy: "Why is the Democratic Party of Korea staying silent?"

[Financial News] People Power Party floor leader Chung Jeom-sik questioned a petition reportedly containing additional allegations about Kim Seung-won, the former nominee for justice minister, on the 22nd. "Why are lawmakers in the Democratic Party of Korea who had highlighted their women's movement backgrounds staying silent?" he asked. "Why are you not protesting when sexual harassment is dismissed as mere gossip?"
At a floor strategy meeting held at the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea that day, Chung Jeom-sik said, "Yesterday, Cheong Wa Dae spokesperson Kang Yoo-jung said regarding the petition involving former nominee Kim Seung-won, 'There is no obligation to respond to gossip.'"
Chung Jeom-sik said, "If so, are you saying that the nominee for justice minister resigned over nothing more than gossip? Does that make sense? The petition concerns allegations that a public office nominee engaged in sexual harassment, drunk driving, accounting fraud, solicitation, verbal abuse and abuse of power. These are all allegations of shameless crimes. How can this be called gossip?"
Addressing lawmakers from the Democratic Party of Korea, he criticized them, saying, "You are practicing the feminism permitted by the Democratic Party's 'oppa' figures while watching the powerful's reactions. I am tired of your hypocrisy in treating even sex crimes as a matter of political calculus."
Chung Jeom-sik said, "Can we allow crimes committed against the public to be buried while overlooking allegations of crimes by those in power?" He called on police to conduct an investigation into lawmaker Kim Seung-won without fear or favor.
He added, "Lawmaker Kim Seung-won has now withdrawn as a ministerial nominee, and the ball is in the Democratic Party of Korea's court. The Democratic Party of Korea should stop shielding Kim Seung-won, who has piled lies on top of sordid allegations, and expel him from the party."
