Tesla shares began the week higher on the 21st (local time). The rise was fueled by the company's announcement over the weekend that it would begin accepting reservations for the second-generation Tesla Roadster through its website. Tesla shares jumped $11.03, or 3.03%, to close at $375.30.
According to Yahoo Finance, the Tesla Roadster is the electric vehicle that laid the foundation for Tesla's launch. Its second-generation model will be unveiled on October 1.
Customers must pay a $5,000 deposit to place a reservation and wire an additional $45,000 within 10 days. The vehicle's price has not been disclosed, but it is expected to exceed $250,000.
The first-generation Tesla Roadster, Tesla's first electric vehicle, was launched in 2008 and sold through 2012. It was developed on the body of the Lotus Elise, a lightweight British sports car, because Tesla, then a startup, lacked the funds and infrastructure to design and produce an entirely new body from scratch.
Instead, Tesla redesigned more than 60% of the vehicle's body structure to accommodate a battery pack and electric powertrain, while enlarging the body. Despite its similar appearance, less than 6% of its parts were shared with the Lotus Elise.
According to The Information, a limited-production vehicle equipped with a cold-gas thruster developed in collaboration with SpaceX is expected to be unveiled at the Tesla Roadster event on October 1. Cold-gas thrusters are mainly used by spacecraft and satellites to make fine directional adjustments in space. They generate thrust by briefly releasing high-pressure gas forcefully through a nozzle. The technology is expected to allow the vehicle to hover briefly or even lift off the ground.
The second-generation Tesla Roadster was originally scheduled to launch in 2020. Tesla announced the plan in 2017 and began accepting reservations.
Elon Musk brought up the Tesla Roadster at last week's All-In Summit. Musk said, "It'll be a huge hit. I can't guarantee success, but it'll be extremely exciting." Jason Calacanis, one of the summit's hosts, added that he had previewed the demonstration and said the event "will blow people away."
The All-In Summit is a major annual conference hosted by the All-In Podcast, a tech and business podcast run by four prominent Silicon Valley venture capitalists. It is a star-studded event attended by major figures from the technology and financial industries, including Musk, Google co-founder Sergey Brin, OpenAI's Sam Altman, and Ray Dalio, founder of Bridgewater Associates, the world's largest hedge fund.
Meanwhile, Tesla is also preparing to hold an event for the Tesla Semi on the 24th.
