If a North Korean Mine Explosion Is Confirmed, Inter-Korean Relations Could Chill Sharply... Fears Grow of a Repeat of the Wooden-Box Mine Confrontation 11 Years Ago

[Financial News] Tensions between the two Koreas are escalating after an apparent mine explosion on the Western Front left three military officers moderately to seriously injured. If the explosion is found to have been caused by North Korean troops, inter-Korean relations could chill sharply and the military confrontation could intensify. The military standoff that began with the North Korean wooden-box mine incident 11 years ago could also be repeated.
On the 22nd, the South Korean military was reportedly investigating all possibilities behind the explosion on the Western Front the previous day, including the accidental displacement of a North Korean mine, the deliberate planting of a mine by North Korean troops, and the displacement of a South Korean mine. However, the area where North Korean troops were alleged to have planted mines, as claimed by People Power Party lawmaker Yoo Yong-won the previous day, was reportedly far from the site of the explosion.
Yoo held an emergency press conference at the National Assembly's press briefing room the previous day and raised suspicions, saying, "It may have exploded near a minefield established by North Korean troops." During recent questioning of the government on foreign affairs, unification, and national security, Yoo became the first to disclose that minefields established by North Korean troops had encroached about 10 to 15 meters across the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) in six division defense sectors along the Western Front.
The incident occurred at a frontline unit of the Army's 25th Division, which is responsible for Paju and Yeoncheon County. An explosion of unknown origin occurred while South Korean military officers were conducting a search operation in the area south of the MDL inside the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).
If the explosion is confirmed to have been caused by a mine planted by North Korea, as Yoo claimed, military tensions between the two Koreas are expected to reach their highest point.
During the administration of Park Geun-hye, inter-Korean relations also plunged to their lowest point during the August 2015 wooden-box mine provocation in the DMZ.
At the time, wooden-box mines deliberately planted by North Korean troops after they crossed 440 meters south of the MDL exploded twice.
Two South Korean military noncommissioned officers conducting a search operation suffered severe injuries and lost their legs. A joint investigation by the South Korean military and the United Nations Command (UNC) determined that the incident was a deliberate provocation by North Korea. In retaliation, the South Korean military abruptly resumed loudspeaker broadcasts toward North Korea, which had been suspended for 11 years since 2004. North Korea protested the broadcasts by firing anti-aircraft guns and flat-trajectory artillery toward South Korean loudspeaker positions. The South Korean military immediately responded with counterfire from self-propelled artillery.
The Kim Jong Un regime declared a "quasi-state of war" in frontline areas and issued an ultimatum, warning that it would launch full-scale military action unless the loudspeaker broadcasts were halted within 48 hours. Amid a crisis on the brink of full-scale war, 43 hours of nonstop marathon negotiations were held at Panmunjom. The talks were followed by the August 25 joint statement. North Korea expressed regret over the injuries suffered by South Korean soldiers in the wooden-box mine explosions, while South Korea agreed to suspend its loudspeaker broadcasts toward North Korea, bringing the crisis to an end for the time being.
