Serious Crimes Investigation Agency Set to Launch in October; 201 Apply for Second-Round Special Appointments

The Serious Crime Investigation Agency, which is scheduled to launch on the 2nd of next month, received applications from 201 prosecutors and employees of the Supreme Prosecutors' Office of the Republic of Korea for its second round of special appointments. The government plans to assess their experience and expertise by the end of this month, select those eligible for appointment, and assign them in stages to coincide with the agency's launch.
The Serious Crime Investigation Agency Launch Preparation Task Force under the Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on the 21st that 201 people applied for the second-round special appointments, for which applications were accepted from the 15th to the 20th. Eligible applicants include prosecutors; civil servants at grade 7 or above in the prosecution and drug investigation series; and general-service civil servants in the computer systems and broadcasting and communications series, among others.
A total of 2,376 people applied for the first-round special appointments, held from the 7th to the 20th of last month. After a withdrawal period, the final number of applicants was confirmed at 1,761. Given that the launch of the Serious Crimes Investigation Agency was imminent, no separate withdrawal period was provided for the second-round applications.
The 201 second-round applicants will not all be appointed. By the end of this month, the task force will select those to receive actual special appointments, taking into account their preferred work locations, experience and expertise. The figure of 1,761 from the first round, also shown in this report, refers to the "final number of applicants"; the actual number of appointments was not provided.
Positions left vacant after the special appointments will be filled through separate career-based competitive recruitment. Eligible candidates include police officers, attorneys, accountants, and experts in cyber technology and financial analysis. Under the supplementary provisions of the relevant law, civil servants whose affiliation changes from the Supreme Prosecutors' Office of the Republic of Korea to the Public Prosecution Office may apply for special appointments to the Serious Crimes Investigation Agency until April 30 next year.
