Kumho Engineering & Construction to Complete Korea’s First Fuel Conversion Project, Gumi Natural Gas Power Plant, This Month

[Financial News]  The 500-MW-class Gumi Natural Gas Power Plant, built solely by Kumho Engineering & Construction, is scheduled for completion by the end of this month. It is Korea’s first fuel conversion project, replacing Taean Coal-Fired Power Plant Unit 1 with a natural gas combined-cycle power plant.
According to Kumho Engineering & Construction on the 21st, the Gumi Natural Gas Power Plant was commissioned by Korea Western Power and is being built in the 5th National Industrial Complex in Gumi High-Tech Valley, Gumi.
The plant consists of one gas turbine, one steam turbine and a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG). It uses a combined-cycle process in which natural gas is burned to generate electricity first through the gas turbine, while the waste heat produced in the process creates steam to additionally operate the steam turbine.
Once full-scale operations begin, Gumi’s power self-sufficiency rate is expected to rise from the current 6% to approximately 30%. Kumho Engineering & Construction expects the plant to provide a stable power supply to Gumi High-Tech Valley and support the development of a semiconductor-focused industrial complex.
Kumho Engineering & Construction is expanding its construction track record in LNG power generation and plant projects. Before the Gumi Natural Gas Power Plant, it participated in the Gongju Natural Gas Power Plant project and the natural gas supply facilities project for the Suwon Combined Heat and Power Plant.
More recently, the company has broadened its energy infrastructure business by winning contracts for the Pocheon Pumped-Storage Hydroelectric Power Plant and the East Coast Converter Station.
