On the 21st, Hana Bank said it had issued a five-year, US$100 million foreign-currency digital bond on the 18th through Euroclear's blockchain-based Digital Financial Market Infrastructure (D-FMI). This was the first digital bond issuance in Korea to directly use D-FMI, operated by Euroclear, a global international central securities depository (ICSD).
A digital bond is a purely digital form of bond in which the entire process, from issuance and registration to settlement, is handled directly on a distributed ledger technology (DLT) network.
Through this issuance, Hana Bank achieved same-day settlement (T+0), the first such case in Korea's foreign-currency bond issuance market. Bond allocation and the transfer of funds were processed instantly on the distributed ledger, significantly shortening the conventional bond settlement cycle from three to five business days to the same day (T+0). This enhanced funding stability and maximized operational efficiency.
The issuance also supports full integration with Euroclear's existing traditional global settlement network. By using the same documents from the Global Medium Term Note (GMTN) program used for existing foreign-currency bond issuances, global institutional investors can safely and easily trade digital bonds through their existing Euroclear accounts and trading systems without complicated additional procedures.
A Hana Bank official said, "We will continue to quickly adopt advanced infrastructure and explore innovative funding solutions that meet global investors' needs."
