People Power Party to File Authority Dispute Petition over Cheong Wa Dae's "Request for Renomination of Supreme Court Justice"

[Financial News] The People Power Party decided on the 20th to file a petition with the Constitutional Court of Korea over Cheong Wa Dae's request for a renewed nomination of a Supreme Court justice. On the 28th of last month, Cheong Wa Dae requested a new nomination without submitting to the National Assembly the appointment-consent motion for Judge Son Bong-gi of the Daegu District Court, whom Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae nominated to succeed former Supreme Court Justice Rho Tae-ak.
The People Power Party said in a press notice that "Regarding the infringement of the National Assembly's authority to consent to the appointment of a Supreme Court justice and lawmakers' rights to deliberate and vote, caused by President Lee's failure to submit the appointment-consent motion for Supreme Court justice nominee Son Bong-gi and his request for a renewed nomination, we plan to submit a petition for adjudication of a dispute over authority to the Constitutional Court of Korea on the 21st."
The People Power Party said, "The Chief Justice's power to nominate is an authority explicitly stipulated in the Constitution, but Cheong Wa Dae's request for a renewed nomination has no constitutional basis" (Chung Jeom-sik, the party's floor leader). The party has characterized Cheong Wa Dae's request as unconstitutional and demanded that the appointment-consent motion for Judge Son be sent to the National Assembly.
