"South Korea’s First Gold Medal Is Here!" Seong Seung-min Wins First Women’s Modern Pentathlon Title, Making History

[Financial News] South Korea’s first gold medal at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games has finally arrived. The athlete behind the achievement is Seong Seung-min of Korea National Sport University, the leading figure in South Korean women’s modern pentathlon.
Seong Seung-min scored 1,492 points across fencing, swimming, the obstacle event and the laser run (running and shooting) in the women’s modern pentathlon final at Anjo Sports Park in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, on the 20th, confidently taking the top spot on the podium. It was the first gold medal won by the entire South Korean delegation since the competition opened on the 19th.

With this victory, Seong Seung-min reached a remarkable milestone as the first South Korean woman to win an individual modern pentathlon gold medal at the Asian Games. After becoming the first Asian female athlete to win an Olympic medal—a bronze at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics—she established herself as the undisputed queen of Asian modern pentathlon through this performance. She also made history as the inaugural champion at the first Asian Games to feature the newly introduced obstacle event in place of equestrian competition.
The final was completely dominated by Seong Seung-min. She began by defeating a Kazakh athlete in the opening fencing round, which was held as a first-to-five-points epee tournament, and then overcame China’s Zhang Mingyu in the semifinals. Zhang had been seeking a third consecutive Asian Games individual title. In the final, Seong defeated national-team teammate Kim Eun-joo and finished first overall, securing 250 points.

She then pulled decisively ahead in the obstacle event, earning 358 points with a personal-best time of 29.26 seconds. After adding 295 points in swimming to firmly retain first place, Seong approached the final laser run with composure. Starting 18 seconds ahead of the second-place athlete, she crossed the finish line first without wavering.
In the team event, Seong Seung-min joined Kim Eun-joo, who finished seventh individually, and Su-Min Shin of Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH), who placed 12th individually, to record a combined score of 4,271 points and win a valuable silver medal behind China’s 4,318 points. Although South Korean women’s modern pentathlon failed to reclaim the team title for the first time in 12 years since the 2014 Incheon Asian Games, the team achieved a finish one place higher than its bronze medal at the previous 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games, giving the delegation two major reasons to celebrate.
