Theater to Chronicle the Lives of Actors Who Have Held the Daehangno Stage for 30 Years... 'I, Actor: A Borgesian Dream' Opens Sept. 30

The new production I, Actor: A Borgesian Dream, which brings to the stage the lives and years of theater actors who have held the Daehangno stage for more than 30 years, will run from September 30 to October 18 at Theater 2 of Sky Theater in Daehangno.
This production by MIR Repertory Theater was created by playwright Park Hee-yeon and director Lee Jae-sang. It grew out of the idea of preserving an actor's life, records, and autobiography through theater, and surveys not only one individual's life but also contemporary culture and the history of theater in Daehangno. The first featured actors are Yang Chang-wan and Yoon Sang-hyun, both of whom have remained in the field for more than 30 years.
Rather than realistically recreating one actor's life, the play unfolds through a fantastical structure in which the “I” of the past, present, and future face one another. In the fall of 2026, an elderly actor meets his younger self from 30 years earlier in an empty small theater. In 2041, his 65-year-old self faces his 90-year-old self, who is nearing death.
The three versions of “I” from different periods intersect, revisiting the passion of the past, the futility of the future, and the meaning of a life spent as an actor. As its title, A Borgesian Dream, suggests, the play crosses the boundaries between reality and dreams, time and memory, asking, "Is this stage now a dream of the 65-year-old, or a recollection of the 90-year-old?"
Director Lee Jae-sang made the reason for theater's existence the central question of the work in an era when the value of the foundational arts is being pushed aside by capital and market logic. He said, "Even in an age of plutocracy, we must speak through theater," adding, "I want to quietly share with audiences the value and depth of love that only theater possesses."
MIR Repertory Theater plans to continue a long-term repertory project documenting through theater the lives of actors and theater professionals who have held Daehangno together for more than 30 years, beginning with this production. I, Actor: A Borgesian Dream was selected for the 2026 Arts Support Matching Fund project organized by the Korea Mecenat Association and Arts Council Korea (ARKO).
