Donald Trump, President of the United States, declared the creation of an artificial intelligence (AI) force, or "AI Force," on the 19th local time. Just as he created the Space Force during his first term, he now plans to establish an AI Force. As the AI industry has warned of the technology's formidable risks and called for slowing its development, Trump has insisted on a hard-line approach, saying the United States cannot afford to lose its competition with China.
Move to Appoint an AI Czar
Trump said on Truth Social, "Just as we created the Space Force, which achieved tremendous success during my first term, we will create an AI Force." He added that he would appoint an "AI czar" to oversee the administration's AI policy.
According to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), this is the first time a president has proposed creating a federal government organization dedicated to overseeing the AI industry.
Trump has been critical of proposals to strengthen AI regulations and has pushed back against attacks on the sector. Nearly half of respondents in a Gallup poll conducted in March said they "strongly oppose" local AI data centers, but Trump supports AI and the construction of data centers.
Trump declared, "We will not, in any way, hinder or stop the growth of this incredible industry," adding, "Instead, we will support it, help it, and watch over it as it grows!"
Push to Rename AI
He also unveiled a measure aimed at easing public opposition. Trump urged his social media followers to participate in a poll he created himself on renaming AI. He said, "To describe this new phenomenon much more elegantly and accurately, it could be called 'Superior Intelligence (SI),' 'Extreme Intelligence (EI),' or 'Supreme Intelligence (SI).'" This showed his intention to reduce public resistance by changing the name.
The Theory That AI Will Cause Human Extinction Is a "Left-Wing Hoax"
He also emphasized that the United States could continue pursuing America First by using AI as a springboard.
Trump claimed that AI would be "the next industrial revolution, far greater in scale and impact than the internet," adding, "It could account for 25% of U.S. GDP." He continued, "We are ahead of China and the rest of the world, and we will keep it that way."
He went further, lumping together and attacking warnings that AI could cause human extinction, global warming, his two impeachment proceedings, and advocacy for transgender people. He said, "It is a hoax created by all radical-left 'stupid Democrats' with the aim of destroying our country," adding, "As President of the United States, I will not stand by and watch this happen."
