Greenland's security guaranteed by U.S.-Denmark agreement

[Financial News] The United States and Denmark have signed a new agreement regarding Greenland's security. U.S. President Donald Trump announced that with this agreement, the United States has gained 'permanent control' over Greenland's security.
On the 18th (local time), President Donald Trump stated on his social media account Truth Social, "The United States has entered into an agreement with the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland that grants the United States permanent security control," adding, "From now on, America's adversaries cannot place bases or station troops in Greenland without our explicit written approval, nor can they make sensitive investments."
President Donald Trump, who was re-elected in January 2025, has consistently expressed his intention to exercise security control over Greenland on the grounds that it must block the expansion of China and Russia.
Denmark and Greenland also expressed their welcome for the signing of this security agreement.
In a statement, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen described the agreement as "an excellent agreement that recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark and the right of self-determination of the people of Greenland," adding that it "will benefit the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and Europe by strengthening common security in the Arctic and North Atlantic regions."
Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen also expressed his welcome, calling it "an agreement that benefits all of us and will certainly strengthen Greenland's security." The agreement is scheduled to be officially signed at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York next week.
Greenland is known not only to be strategically important but also to be rich in rare earth reserves necessary for the production of high-tech products.
The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reported that this agreement remains in effect even if Greenland gains independence.
President Donald Trump's actions regarding Greenland have sparked backlash across Europe and triggered a response from the European Union (EU). EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen visited Greenland earlier this month and announced a partnership investment worth 200 million euros over this year and next.
President Donald Trump has repeatedly attempted to purchase or annex Greenland, a resource-rich autonomous territory of Denmark, arguing that it is vulnerable to threats from Russia and China. He even went so far as to make military threats to seize the territory, drawing backlash from Denmark as well as NATO nations.
He has emphasized that Greenland is essential for building the 'Golden Dome missile defense system,' which is particularly needed to defend against missiles from China and Russia.
