[Financial News] The broader opposition camp unleashed criticism after Kim Seung-won, nominee for Minister of Justice, was forced to withdraw over allegations including new-drug lobbying and a family cooperative.
Jang Dong-hyuk said on social media on the 19th, "Candidate Kim eventually resigned. They call it a resignation, but he was forced to resign," adding, "The Lee administration is crumbling one piece at a time. This is the fate of an administration that defied public sentiment."
Jang said, "President Lee Jae Myung likely intended to change the game with his press conference on the 18th and push through Kim's appointment. The Democratic Party of Korea even pushed through the adoption of the confirmation hearing report the day before the president's press conference. The president also tested the public's reaction by saying, 'I haven't made the final decision yet.'"
He continued, "But the result of the president's press conference was devastating. If anything, it threw the situation into even greater disarray. The situation deteriorated to the point that Kim had to be cut loose."
Jang lashed out, "Even as he stepped down, Candidate Kim blamed 'others' and 'the prosecution' alone. Does he mean he is stepping down despite having done nothing wrong?" He added, "The time of the 'minister' is over, and the time of the 'investigation' has begun. All the allegations—including stock manipulation, human experimentation on the public, and the family cooperative—must be properly investigated."
Chung Jeom-sik, the People Power Party's floor leader, wrote on social media, "It is long overdue that Candidate Kim, the leading figure behind President Lee's push to withdraw prosecutions, has now resigned. Regardless of whether he resigns as a ministerial nominee, investigative authorities must continue probing allegations that Candidate Kim was involved in stock manipulation."
Han Dong-hoon, an independent lawmaker, wrote on social media shortly after Kim's resignation, "A victory for the people." He added, "Although the Lee Jae Myung-led Democratic Party of Korea fought with all its might to defend the 'oppa poison-drug lobbying' as 'an appointment that looks better the more you look at it,' the people won."
