[Financial News] Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, is set to deliver a presentation on AI safety at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
Reuters reported on the 18th (local time), citing an OpenAI spokesperson, that Altman is scheduled to attend and brief next week's UNSC meeting, whose agenda includes AI and international security.
During the briefing, Altman is expected to outline the steps OpenAI is taking to promote AI safety and benefit all of humanity. He will also emphasize the need for international cooperation and common safety standards.
The UNSC meeting comes amid growing attention to AI safety. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, recently called for slowing the pace of AI development, and the heads of AI companies, including Altman, have voiced support.
Despite his bitter rivalry with Amodei, Altman has unusually aligned with him and is actively warning that AI could escape human control.
Altman has long warned about the risks of AI technology. In a post he wrote in 2015, he said, "The development of superhuman machine intelligence will be the greatest threat to the survival of humanity."
The UNSC also held a meeting on the risks of AI in 2023. At that meeting, China said the technology must not become uncontrollable like a "runaway horse," while the United States expressed concern that AI technology could be used for censorship or repression.
