[Financial News] President Lee Jae Myung approved the appointment of Kim Sung-soo, 57, a member of the 24th class of the Judicial Research and Training Institute, as a Supreme Court justice on the 18th.
Kim is now the first Supreme Court justice to take office since the current administration began.
The National Assembly of the Republic of Korea’s Special Committee on Personnel Hearings held a hearing for Kim, the nominee, on the 14th and adopted a report on the proceedings by agreement between the ruling and opposition parties on the 16th.
The Democratic Party of Korea issued an opinion that he was qualified, while the People Power Party deemed him unqualified.
However, the People Power Party decided to allow lawmakers to vote freely. At the plenary session of the National Assembly on the 17th, the appointment consent motion passed with 227 votes in favor, 28 against and 13 abstentions, out of 268 lawmakers present.
