[Financial News] Lotte Chilsung Beverage is strengthening its competitiveness in eco-friendly products by obtaining the largest number of low-carbon product certifications in the food industry.
According to Lotte Chilsung Beverage on Sept. 20, its Chilsung Cider 500ml MR-PET (mechanically recycled PET), made entirely from recycled materials, received low-carbon product certification in August. It was the first case of MR-PET made with recycled materials receiving the certification. As a result, carbon emissions can be reduced by approximately 17% compared with conventional virgin plastic PET throughout the product's life cycle, from raw material extraction through production, distribution, use and disposal.
The Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute operates an Environmental Product Declaration certification scheme that provides quantitative environmental impact data, enabling consumers and businesses to use environmental information based on public trust. As of August, Lotte Chilsung Beverage had obtained Environmental Product Declarations for 19 products from its major brands. Of these, 12 products, including Icis and Cantata, received low-carbon product certification. The company has the largest number of low-carbon products in the industry.
Changes are also continuing in alcoholic beverages. The 640ml PET versions of the leading soju brands Chum-Churum and Saero are the only low-carbon products in the alcoholic beverage industry, expanding the range of eco-friendly products. Benefits have also been introduced for consumers who choose eco-friendly products. The Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute has designated 10 representative low-carbon certified products as climate products and offers special Green Card rewards. Customers who purchase climate products at participating stores nationwide, including convenience stores and large supermarkets, will receive a special 40% rewards benefit through Oct. 31. A Lotte Chilsung Beverage official said, "We will continue to expand environmental certifications across various product categories and pursue innovations to reduce environmental impacts throughout our corporate value chain, including the production and distribution of raw materials."
